Pleased to meet you! I'm Jake Johnson; founder of Penned Down. To know the story of Penned Down you need to know how I got into calligraphy in the first place.

Several years ago, I was sitting on the couch watching a movie on a clear fall day. The lead actor was describing something and gave a very brief mention of "calligraphy." Although I realized, based on the scene, that the implied meaning of the word had something to do with writing or lettering, I somehow got really curious about it. I did a little research and discovered that this artform has been around since recorded history, and, like many things, wasn't that hard to learn; only hard to become proficient in.

Well I couldn't just leave my curiosity abandoned on the path. I went to the local craft store and bought a beginner book made to get new calligraphers off the ground. I bought a pen, some ink, and set out to learn my first script.

I was dating my beautiful wife at the time and decided to write her a love letter once my skills were somewhat non-laughable. I soon realized that romance, like many things, is not dead in our world. Handwritten sentiments are not dead either. The magic in a person's eyes when they receive a hand-crafted, custom calligraphed art piece is priceless. I knew right then that this would become more than just an idle hobby of mine.

I founded Penned Down for several reasons, but I would say the main reasons all center around the type of reaction I got from my wife when she read that letter I wrote her and the reactions I've gotten in the past when I would show friends and family the vintage looking art pieces that I've made. Doesn't matter if it's a letter, a postcard, or something that just sits on your fireplace at home; calligraphy gifts and pieces of art are an awesome way to brighten someone's day or add some attitude and vintage feel to any space.

Thank you for being here, thank you for supporting us, and thank you for helping to create stories of your own!
